How to get rid of dust from everywhere at home?

While winter is not here yet, we are undoubtedly enjoying the last warmth, sunshine, and fresh air. However, as the sun is shining and the birds are singing, a whole team of dust particles is dancing in the air. In fact, the amount of dust inside your house grows whenever you open your windows. It is not uncommon for the dust to cause allergies, irritations, and sneezing.

If you try to get rid of dust while in the sun, you will notice that regular dusters do not get rid of it, they simply push it around, removing it from one surface but spreading it all over another. Unless you are using the correct methods, you will keep spreading dust around. There are ways in which you can effectively get rid of the dust for good so keep reading to find out what those are.

In order to remove all the dust from your home, regular handling is needed. If you tackle the dusting at home on a schedule, you will be able to reduce the dust particles, prevent them from building up and eventually make dust easier to get rid of. Ideally, you should dust all surfaces and easy-to-reach spots at least once a month (or every two weeks, depending on the dust pollution of the area you live in). For harder-to-reach areas, you can get away with dusting every 3-6 months. Do not forget to clean upholstery, since it collects a large amount of the dust found in your house.

  1. Always gather the supplies you need
Regular dusters cannot get a hold of dust – they simply spread it around. This is why you need to get a microfiber cloth. The durable fabric of microfiber cloths can actually catch and pick up dust instead of just moving it around. The best part is that whenever the microfiber cloth gets dirty all you have to do is throw it in the washing machine and dryer. Keep a pack of microfiber cloths around – they are durable, cost-effective, and reusable. For higher areas of your house, get a microfiber duster on a pole that will allow you to easily reach any corner.
  2. Always dust from ceiling to floor
Even though it might be tempting to start dusting the first thing you see, hold back. You should always start dusting the highest surfaces and areas of your house. If you have a ceiling fan, always tackle it first – do not forget it since your whole house will be filled with dust the second you turn it on. Whenever you dust your house top to bottom, you will ensure that all dust particles found on the top surfaces will end up below yet to be cleaned, or on the floor where you will be able to easily vacuum them. Simply dampen your microfiber cloth and wipe off all dust.
  3. Use a vacuum cleaner where possible
If you have a lightweight or a handheld vacuum cleaner, use it in corners and areas that you want to give extra attention to. Make sure the vacuum cleaner has a HEPA filter and a round brush attachment. HEPA filters do not allow the dust to be released back into your room and keep it trapped inside.
  4. Use microfiber cloths on glass surfaces as well
Microfiber cloths are suitable for a number of different surfaces. There are special cloths of that kind that are made for glass and ensure a streak-free shine that will not only remove all dust from the surface but make it look spotless and clean.
  5. Go all the way down to her baseboards
Once you have moved from all the top shelves, surfaces, and light fixtures, dust the countertops and tables, upholstery, and walls, and go all the way down to the baseboards. You will be surprised by the difference a well-dusted baseboard makes to the appearance of the room. Vacuum your baseboards first (use the round brush attachment). Spray your microfiber cloth with your favourite all-purpose cleaner and wipe them well. If there are any scuffs or stains, use a magic eraser to get rid of them.

Do this once every two weeks or at least once a month for good results. You will notice that the amount of dust inside your home has been reduced, the quality of air has improved and you will not be so irritated, especially when enjoying the sunny, fresh weather outside.

Extra tips:

  • Do not forget to vacuum your upholstery and curtains. They are made of fabric and, in fact., collect a large amount of dust at home. Make sure you thoroughly vacuum them whenever you are doing your regular cleaning routine.
  • When cleaning upholstery, make sure you vacuum underneath, behind, and between the cushions. That is where dust mostly builds up.
